Bob Glika, former director of photography for National Geographic, says that the photojournalism profession is up to its armpits in good photographers but only up to its ankles in photographers with good ideas. As a photojournalist I enjoy exploring different ways to take photographs, taking the “same old story” – be it a high school football game or at a guest speaker – and pushing myself to not only make the photographs different, but some way better than the last photograph. I think that in order to become a great photojournalist you not only have to be able to capture storytelling moments, but also have skills that make you a great “people person.” I find it very important to get to know the subject or know some background information of an event that you are shooting. Ask questions, explore the situation and listen to what they have to say. I have quickly learned that one of the key aspects of a photojournalist is being persistent, not taking no for an answer right away. I’ve learned to not only think of myself as a photographer but also as a reporter. I want to learn new things as a photojournalist and be a wealth of knowledge through the people I meet and the experiences I have. Life is more then just about reading a book; it’s about making one.
