2008 Michigan Press Photographers Association Competition

This past weekend was the 2008 Michigan Press Photographer Association competition in Lansing, MI. The weekend mostly consisted of being in a conference room with a large projection screen, listening to three judges tear apart and sometimes complement the work of Michigan’s finest photojournalists. Though it may not sound like fun to basically watch a slide show presentation for eight to nine hours, this weekend is always great because students and professionals get a chance to look at the good photojournalism that is made in Michigan.

Through the mix of the great photojournalism that was shown this weekend, the judges thought that one of my photos was worthy enough of first place in the spot news category. This photo was made during the month of August during my Jackson Citizen Patriot internship. This photo, some of you might recall from a blog post last year labeled House Fire.

Not only did I receive the first place recognition for my spots news photo, I was also presented with 2008 Honorable Mention Michigan College Photographer of the Year. This is a huge accomplishment for me. After the 2007 MPPA competition, I made it a goal of mine to at least place in this year’s MPPA competition. So to say the least, I was very pleased.

Below is the image the won spot news and also a slide show of my honorable mention portfolio.

  3. Congratulations Dan! I hadn't previously seen many of these pictures, so I'm glad you put them up! You should make sure the Jackson Patriot knows how awesome you are and that a photo you took for them won!
