As promised from when I posted Harrison’s senior portraits, here are some photos from when I had the privilege of standing on the sideline and photographing one of his football games in California. This particular game Harrison was definitely on FIRE! Throwing for 4 touchdowns, 301 total passing yards and had a career long pass of 70 yards. Not only did he burn a hole in the stat book, but he lead the team to a 42-7 victory over Alta Loma. I figured he was just showing off because I was there, but I took a look at some game film and it seems he performs like this quite often. These portraits were part of a project I was working on for the football tab that the paper puts out. I was looking forward to this assignment because I saw it as practice with lighting and scene setters to take senior portraits this fall.

This kid is 15 and he has already competed in multiple triathlons. Crazy!

Sports portraits

Over the last month or so I got to take the photographs of the “Player of the Year” in each of the Spring Sports. I used one flash and all except for the baseball portraits I was holding the flash in one hand while my camera was in the other. There were a lot of times I would find myself tangled up trying to find the best place to put the light. Sometimes there would be someone walking by and I would ask them to hold the flash for me. Overall I think they turned out alright and I think I am going to use this technique during the fall when I am taking senior portraits. Breaking tradition, oh yea!

I have never really understood why people would want to beat up someone else in a controlled environment. My room mates would watch UFC sometimes and as I would walk by the TV to my bedroom, I would just shake my head and say, “what is the point of this “sport”? My confusion for this has become greater ever since I had to cover a cage fighting exhibition last Saturday. These young men, weighing between 130-250 lbs would become tangled up with one another, dancing around the cage, swinging and kicking till one went down, and when he did, his opponent would jump on top of him and beat his face till blood was drawn. If he wouldn’t give up after getting his face beat in, his opponent would put him in a choke submission till he passed out. The ref would stop the match, the victorious fighter would parade around the cage, the medic would run up to wake the passed out fighter and when the loser became conscious, the winner would take time to thank his opponent and give him a hug and say “good job”?? What the heck? One minute you hate his guts and want to kill the guy and the next minute you guys become friends? I may not ever understand this “sport”.

One of the many exciting things that Jackson has to offer is the Michigan International Speedway. Fans from the surrounding area gather to watch these cars go in a circle at an average speed of 188 mph. It doesn’t sound that exciting, but it is definitely a lot different to experience this in person than watch it on TV. So my adventures started off on Saturday where my job, well what I thought my job was, was to track down Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch and get in front of these driver’s faces and get a photo of them, so I did just that. With Erik Holladay as my guide, I set off with my VIP pass to get into the garage area where I was playing the role of a paparazzi photographer. So I took their pictures and I only got threatened to be kicked out once by a NASCAR official because I backed into him, twice. Sunday was the exciting day with being able to stick my head through the fence as the cars are zipping by you at 190 mph. By the end of the day I had little pieces of tire in my hair and stuck to my face, all and all Erik and I had a good time and came out alive. oh PS I told Dale Earnhardt Jr. good luck and I shook his hand before the race on Saturday, no wonder he won.

I’m not sure what I think about softball

For me shooting softball was difficult, this game there wasn’t much action, the games go quick so you are scrambling to try to make great photos in a short period of time, and I didn’t know where I should position myself. Lucky I came back with something to put in the paper.

The internship down in Jackson has been pretty cool so far. I have had a lot of interesting assignments and I love the staff here. I haven’t been updating my blog because I do not have the internet at my apt. I know, how do I live, well I get by. I got myself a bike and I have Herbie there so we spend our time taking walks and sleeping mostly. Anyway I finally have some time and I got the ok from Scott about posting pictures, so here you go. Let me know what you think, Alex… wink;)This wasn’t my first assignment but it was my first track meet that I have ever shot. I haven’t shot a whole lot of sporting events so having Scott throw all of these sports assignments at me was kind of nerv-racking, especially when using equipment that I have never used before.
