2026 Wedding Photography Trends (& Which Ones Actually Matter)

Every year, new wedding photography trends make the rounds.

Some feel fresh. Others feel like something I shot in 2012, circling back with a new name.

That’s the tricky part for couples. You don’t want photos that’ll feel dated in five years. But you also don’t want to miss out on something you might love.

Here’s what I’m seeing for 2026 and my honest take on what’s worth paying attention to.

Editorial Candids

These wedding photography trends I can get behind. It’s the mix of magazine-quality composition with real, unposed moments.

Movement. Atmosphere. Cinematic angles. Images that capture the energy of the day in a way that feels artful without trying too hard.

Done right, these photos balance style with timelessness.

Film Photography

Film has been around forever, and honestly, I don’t think it’s ever going out of style. Certainly not wedding photography trends in my book.

There’s something about the texture. The grain. The way it slows everything down and makes you more intentional.

I shoot 35mm and Super 8, and I love what film brings to a wedding day. It adds depth and nostalgia without feeling manufactured (looking at you, sepia filters).

Creative Compositions

Wide angles. Layered frames. Double exposures.

These techniques add variety to a gallery. But they’ve been around for decades. I remember when tilt-shift lenses were everywhere, creating that dreamy out-of-focus effect at the edges.

Do I sound like a photography old timer yet?

Creative tools can be great when they’re used intentionally. But they shouldn’t replace the honest storytelling of the day.

Direct Flash

You’ll see this all over Instagram: bright, high-contrast images with a nightlife vibe.

For years, direct flash was a no-no. Too harsh. Too unflattering. Photographers went out of their way to bounce light, diffuse it, soften it—anything to avoid pointing the flash straight at someone.

But now? It’s back. And when it fits the mood, it definitely works. There are wedding photography trends I can get behind.

Second Photographer Coverage

More couples are adding a second shooter to their wedding package

A second photographer means more angles, more moments captured, more coverage when things are happening simultaneously. Getting ready in separate locations. Ceremony from multiple perspectives. Reception moments you’d otherwise miss.

A second photographer can also lend add-on services like film, Super 8, or videography.

If you want that texture and nostalgia woven into your gallery, a second shooter who specializes in film can add that dimension without your primary photographer needing to switch gears.

It’s about complementing the coverage. Adding layers. Giving you a fuller story of the day.

I’ve second-shot for other photographers for years, often bringing film into the mix. The feedback is always the same: that I work seamlessly with the primary photographer to elevate the final gallery. And that’s exactly what my team of second shooters offers, too.

The One Wedding Photography Trend I Can’t Get Behind…

Images that look like they’re straight from the camera. Flat. Washed out. Unfinished. Or alternatively, over-edited—think oversaturated orange skin tones or images that look unnaturally muted.

In my opinion, it’s terrible.

These editing trends come and go (remember selective color, where everything was black and white except the bouquet?). But they always find their way back to true, vibrant colors. The kind that actually reflects the emotion of the day.

Final Thoughts on 2026 Wedding Photography Trends

I’ve been photographing weddings for over 17 years from Traverse City, Michigan—a.k.a. long enough to have seen trends come and go. Long enough to know what’s held up as truly timeless.

Here’s what all that time has taught me: the photos that matter aren’t the ones that look cool on Instagram for a week. They’re the ones that pull you back into how the day felt. The ones your kids will ask about someday.

That’s what I’m here for.

Documenting the people you love. The moments that happen when no one’s performing. The story of your day, told honestly.

If you’re planning a 2026 wedding and this sounds like what you’re looking for, reach out. I’d love to hear about your day.

Sound like we’d be a good fit?
