Photography vs Videography and How to Choose

I get asked about this a lot. People assume photography and videography are interchangeable. Or they default to just photography without really considering the value of video.

But here’s the truth:

The photography vs videography debate isn’t about which one is “better.” It’s about what each does best–and how combining them creates something greater than the sum of its parts.

At Dan Stewart Photography, we offer both photography and videography packages. I’ve seen firsthand how they each shine on their own… and how powerful they can be together.

Photography vs Videography: What’s the Difference?

Photography is life’s pause button–the fraction of a second you’d miss if you blinked.

It’s timeless. Tangible. It lives on your wall, in your photo albums, in that frame on the mantel you pass every day.

Videography is life in motion. It gives you sound, movement, and the way laughter becomes contagious. They say photos let you relive a moment–but video lets you step back inside it.

Both are storytellers. They’re both after similar goals, but the end result is very different.

When Photography is Irreplaceable

Photography is unbeatable for:

  • Portraits and still moments
  • Wall-worthy prints and albums
  • Holiday cards and announcements
  • Candid reactions you can relive at a glance

One single photo can carry decades of meaning without needing any playback. The moment you see each other for the first time all dressed up. The kiss right after the vows. Your grandma’s smile.

When Videography is Irreplaceable

Some moments just don’t hold still.

Videography is the only way to:

  • Hear the speeches and vows
  • See the way your dad dances when he thinks no one’s watching
  • The laughter, the dancing, the cheers, and all the mannerisms and movement in between

At a wedding, video captures the things you can’t frame: the tremble in a voice during vows, the laughter spilling out during toasts, the energy of the dance floor late into the night.

The Power of Combining Both

Here’s the thing…photography and videography aren’t competitors. They’re teammates.

For weddings, photography is your art for the wall, the photo album. Videography is your immersive time machine. Together, they tell the story with more depth, emotion, and truth than either could alone.

That’s why we offer combined coverage for our weddings. I never want you to have to choose between the frame and the film.

How to Decide What’s Right for You

Ask yourself:

  • How will I use the final product?
  • Do I want to hear the voices and watch the movement of the day?
  • Is this a once-in-a-lifetime milestone that I’ll want to look back on and watch over and over again?
  • What’s my budget and priority?

For most weddings, the answer isn’t either/or. While I’ve never had a couple forgo photography just for video, I’ve seen time and time again how grateful couples are when they choose a mix of both. My team and I are here to help you make the right call for your story and your day.

Real-Life Examples of Photography Vs. Videography

Some moments call for both. These couples (and families) decided they didn’t want to choose — and the result gave them the best of both worlds.

But we don’t just photograph & film weddings…

We love offering videography for families, especially family reunion films.

For 38 years, this family has gathered at the same lake cabin in Beulah, MI. The photos gave them big portraits together. The video brought back the sound of the waves and laughter — wakeboarding, tubing, and pizza-making in the afternoon. As the kids grow, it gets harder to pull everyone together. Which makes having both photos and video of the time they do have all the more meaningful.

The Bottom Line on Photography vs Videography

It’s not about choosing a winner.
It’s about matching the medium to the memory.

Sometimes that means just photography.

Oftentimes, it means both.

Just like the perfect wine paired with the perfect meal, photography and videography enhance each other. The stills give you art to hold, while the film lets you hear, feel, and relive the movement of the day. Together, they create something seamless, authentic, and beautifully intertwined.

If you’re deciding between photography vs videography for your wedding–or if you want to talk about how we can give you both–I’d love to hear from you.
