Sunny Lakeside Tapawingo Wedding

There are wedding venues in Northern Michigan that just feel timeless, and Tapawingo is one of them. Tucked along the edge of St. Clair Lake in Ellsworth, Tapawingo (part of A Matter of Taste) is a restaurant turned wedding venue, made for gathering with great food and celebrating among some of the most incredible views the lake has to offer.

Tapawingo weddings combine the natural beauty of the waterfront with the warm, inviting atmosphere this spot is known for, making it one of the most unforgettable places to say “I do” in Northern Michigan.

Tapawingo

Tapawingo Wedding Venue: Lakeside Beauty in Ellsworth

Tapawingo sits right on the edge of St. Clair Lake in Ellsworth, Michigan, a central spot that’s just 45 minutes north of Traverse City, 30 minutes south of Petoskey, and only 15 minutes from Charlevoix—close enough for guests to travel easily, but tucked away enough to feel like a retreat.

The venue sits right on the water, surrounded by towering trees and a view that stretches out over the tree-lined shore of the lake. The outdoor ceremony space has that kind of natural beauty and tranquility you simply can’t stage. Calm water. Shade from towering pine trees. The sound of the breeze moving through the branches. Cozy cottages on-site for getting ready.

There’s space for everything: lakeside vows, cocktails on the lawn, and dinner and dancing under a white tent by the water. The venue’s history as a fine dining destination adds another layer of charm—and an unforgettable built-in catering team.

The Day: Relaxed, Joyful, and Full of Heart

Sarah and Sam’s Tapawingo wedding day felt exactly like them. Relaxed. Joyful. Real. Full of warmth (and sunshine).

The vibrant flowers, the canopy of trees, and the shimmering lake created a beautiful backdrop (their vision came together effortlessly thanks to the venue and vendor team), and their excitement for the weekend was clear in every moment.

Their focus went beyond their own vows—they wanted every guest to feel the joy of gathering together. You could feel the anticipation and love as Sarah walked down the aisle, culminating into the moment they finally met under the evergreens to say their vows.

From there, the celebration flowed seamlessly into an evening of dinner, toasts, laughter, and dancing to “Closer” by The Chainsmokers, which brought everyone onto the floor.

The joy. The setting. The people…I don’t believe in the “perfect” wedding, but Sarah & Sam’s day felt pretty dang close.

Why Tapawingo Weddings Always Stand Out

I’ve had the opportunity to shoot a handful of weddings at Tapawingo now, and every wedding has this blend of Northern Michigan beauty and easygoing warmth. The lake, the trees, the food, the laughter—it all comes together in a way that feels both elevated and completely down to earth. (The perfect balance if you ask me.)

And when you look back at the photos, it’s not just the setting that stands out. It’s the way people feel in that setting—present, connected, fully alive in the moment.
