Why Your Engagement Session Matters More Than You Think

When couples start looking into engagement photography, they usually have one thing on their minds: save-the-dates.

And yes, your engagement session absolutely will give you photos for that.

But after nearly two decades of photographing weddings and engagements, I’ve seen how much more it offers. In some ways, it can help make the wedding day easier. By helping you become at ease in front of the camera. And, by giving your photographer a chance to know you as a couple.

Let’s break it down below.

You Learn to Be Comfortable In Front of the Camera

Here’s the truth: most couples feel awkward in front of the camera at first. “I don’t know what to do with my hands” might as well be the unofficial motto of engagement photography.

But here’s the truth: those awkward moments? They’re actually some of my favorites. Someone will say “What are you doing with your hands?” or “Why are you smiling like that?” and suddenly you’re both giggling. Ironically, the self-consciousness becomes the thing that helps you relax.

Embrace the awkwardness. It’s part of the process.

And another thing: that camera shyness doesn’t last (cue the sigh of relief).

In fact, when I’m reviewing photos after a session, I can always pinpoint the exact moment it happens. Your shoulders drop. Your smile finally reaches your eyes. You stop worrying about the camera and start simply being together. That’s when the real, unguarded moments show up.

That’s what your engagement session does. It gets the awkward part out of the way. So that by your wedding day, you can be totally present.

Your Photographer Gets to Know You As a Couple

During an engagement session, I’m paying attention to more than just the light and composition. I’m learning your dynamic as a couple.

How you interact. What makes you laugh. What brings out your connection.

Some couples are total goofballs who can’t take anything seriously (I love this). Others are quieter, more reserved, and their devotion shows up in the smaller gestures.

There’s no wrong way to be. But your engagement session gives insight into what works for you specifically, and that matters because it’s really a time that’s dedicated to portraits. We have time to explore, experiment, and figure out what feels natural for you. Your wedding day is different. Less about posing and more about presence. It’s about being fully there with the people who love you, soaking in the company of your celebration.

You Get to Know Your Photographer

Your wedding photographer will be with you all day. From getting ready to the final song on the dance floor. That’s a significant amount of time with a single vendor.

It matters that you’ve built trust. That you click. That you actually feel comfortable around them.

Your engagement session creates the space for that to happen.

You get to see how your photographer works. How much direction they give. How they move around you. You’re not meeting them for the first time on one of the biggest days of your life. What I wish many couples knew is that it isn’t just about the end-result (a.k.a. album-worthy photos), it’s also about the experience itself. Having a photographer who feels more like a trusted friend vs. a vendor can make a huge difference in your ability to be present throughout the celebration.

These Photos Become Part of Your Story

There’s beauty in capturing the ordinary moments, the in-between seasons. Every chapter of your relationship deserves to be documented.

Your engagement session does that. It preserves where you are right now… engaged, planning, dreaming about what’s next.

Your wedding day will be full of family, friends, and celebration. But your engagement photos? Those are just the two of you. No crowd. No schedule. Just the relationship at the center of it all.
