When couples reach out about engagement photos, one of my first questions is about the type of backgrounds they’re drawn to. By the water? In the woods? Somewhere in town?
Thankfully, up Leelanau County and Grand Traverse County has the best places for engagement photos in Northern Michigan. And once couples know what they’re looking for, I can help them figure out a location that delivers.
But here’s what I always say first: best places for engagement photos in Northern Michigan is anywhere that means something to the both of you. Downtown where you had your first date. The shoreline where you got engaged. Your backyard. These places tell your story better than any Instagram-famous overlook ever could.
And, even if you aren’t local (like many of my couples), it’s less about personal history and more about picking a spot that matches how you like to spend time together.
That said, I’ve been photographing couples in Northern Michigan for 18 years. And if you’re looking for best places for engagement photos in Northern Michigan, I have some favorites.
6 Northern Michigan Engagement Photo Locations I Recommend
#1 Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
This one’s iconic for a reason.
The sweeping dunes. Lake Michigan stretching out behind you. The views that make you stop and take it all in.
What I love about Sleeping Bear is the variety. You’ve got the dramatic dune landscape, direct access to the beach, and spots where the two blend together for something really striking.
It’s a location that gives you options, whether you want wide, cinematic shots or something more intimate down by the water.
Fair warning: it can get crowded, especially in summer. Early morning or weekday sessions work best if you want the place to yourselves.
#2 Brown Bridge Quiet Area
If you’re drawn to water but don’t necessarily want the beach, Brown Bridge is a great option for engagement photos.
At Brown Bridge, the Boardman River runs through wooded trails, giving you glistening water and greenery that both photograph beautifully. Couples also love the stairways, which always make for a great shot.
Most of all, Brown Bridge is peaceful, helping everyone feel relaxed during the session.
#3 Mission Point Lighthouse
Mission Point Lighthouse is another unique location that I love in Northern Michigan.

It sits at the tip of Old Mission Peninsula, surrounded by beach and sand. The historic lighthouse serves as an anchor point for your engagement photos, and offers a lot of character without being overdone.
Another plus: the beach access means you can mix up your backdrop.
#4 Bohemian Road Beach
Bohemian Road Beach is all about the water.
If you aren’t local, Bohemian Road Beach is located in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It sits where Shalda Creek meets Lake Michigan, meaning you get both the stream and the lake in one location.
The beach itself is classic Lake Michigan. Wide open shoreline. Soft sand. And some of the best sunset views in the area.
If you want that windswept, peaceful, end-of-the-day feeling in your photos, this is the spot.
#5 Fishtown
Fishtown has a weathered, historic charm that I absolutely love.
The old (but recently restored) shanties. The docks. The tug boats.
There’s also a cool spot that bridges the Cove Restaurant and Falling Waters Lodge, where you can see the fish trying to jump up the dam to go upstream into Lake Leelanau.
Fishtown is a great option for engagement photos if you’re looking for a location with tons of character. You’re also close to the beach, so we can incorporate water and shoreline into the session too.
Fishtown works from spring to fall. With the exception of Carlson’s Fishery, it completely shuts down during winter.
#6 Downtown Elk Rapids or Leland
For my couples who gravitate towards a downtown setting, I typically recommend small towns like Elk Rapids or Leland. Places where there’s less hustle, less people, and more charm.
I love how relaxed couples feel in this setting. It feels less like a photo shoot and more like spending time together in a place you actually enjoy.
Downtown works year-round and gives your gallery a completely different texture than the beaches and dunes.
The Location That Matters Most? The One That Feels Like You
I can guide you toward the best places for engagement photos in Northern Michigan. But the photos you’ll treasure most are the ones that feel true to your relationship.
Maybe that’s one of the spots I mentioned. Maybe it’s somewhere completely different.
The goal isn’t to chase the trendiest backdrop. It’s to capture who you are, together. That’s what I’m here for.

Let’s Talk About Your Engagement Session
I’m Dan, and I’ve been photographing Northern Michigan weddings and engagement sessions since 2008. I know how the light shifts at Mission Point in late afternoon. Where the best trails are at Brown Bridge Quiet Area. Which corners of Fishtown photograph best in every season.
But more than that, I know how to create space for you to relax, be present with each other, and document authentic moments between the two of you.
If you’re looking for a photographer who understands both the place and the process, let’s connect.
