You’ve said yes. Popped the champagne. Admired the ring. Now, you’re ready to plan.
First on your list? Booking your wedding venue. Then comes the question — when to book your wedding photographer?
And here’s what you might not know: booking your wedding photographer comes at a close second. Ideally 12-18 months in advance.
The reason everyone gives you is the same: Dates fill up fast.
Which is true. They do.
But booking early isn’t just about securing your date. It’s about what happens in the months leading up to your wedding, shaping how your day unfolds.

More Than Reserving a Date
When you book a wedding photographer a year out, you’re giving yourself time to actually get to know them. And more importantly, time for them to get to know you.
We’re not talking about a quick phone call and a contract signature. We’re talking about space for conversations. Planning sessions. An engagement shoot where you figure out how you feel in front of a camera (and realize it’s not as awkward as you thought).
Questions answered. Ideas shared. A relationship that develops slowly, naturally.
By the time your wedding day arrives, your photographer isn’t a stranger with a camera in hand. They’re someone who knows how you and your partner interact with each other. What makes you laugh. How you move through a room. The little things that matter to you.
And that shows up in the photos.
Why Booking Your Wedding Photographer Early Changes Everything
Reason #1: You’re more comfortable on your wedding day.
When you book early, your wedding day isn’t the first time we’re working together.
We’ve already spent months collaborating—planning your timeline, talking through what matters most, maybe doing an engagement session. You know my approach. You’ve seen how I work. You’re not wondering if I’ll “get it.”
The couples who book early are noticeably more relaxed on their wedding day. They stop thinking about the camera and just experience the moment. The result is a collection of photos that immediately takes you back to how the day felt.
Reason #2: It means better collaboration.
A year gives us time to talk through what matters most to you. Not in a rushed, checklist kind of way—but in a way that actually shapes how I approach your day.

Maybe you tell me your dad’s been practicing his speech for months, and I make sure I’m on the lookout for everyone’s reactions. Maybe you mention how much your grandparents mean to you, and I know to watch for moments of interaction between you and them. Maybe you’re worried about feeling awkward during portraits, so we spend extra time during your engagement session figuring out what feels natural.
These aren’t things you learn in a 20-minute discovery call. They’re things that come up over time, in the margins of planning, when you actually have space to think and talk and plan together.
The Wedding Photographer Booking Timeline That Works
So what does that year of collaboration look like? Here’s the timeline I recommend after nearly two decades of photographing weddings:
- Right after booking: We’re officially working together. You can loop me into planning conversations whenever it’s helpful.
- 2 weeks after booking: Schedule your engagement session if you choose to do one.
- 6 months before wedding day: Build a tentative wedding day timeline.
- 2 months before wedding day: First questionnaire where you’ll fill out details about your vendors. You’ll also schedule a consultation with our design team.
- 1 month before wedding day: Final questionnaire, where you’ll provide info about your wedding day. We’ll also schedule a reveal appointment with our design team.
- 2 weeks before wedding day: Final call to go over any last details and get any of your questions answered.
- Wedding day: You’re working with someone who knows you. Someone you trust. Someone who feels less like a vendor and more like a friend who happens to be documenting your day.
That’s the difference a year makes.
What If You’re Getting Married Sooner?
If your wedding is less than a year away, don’t panic.
Can you still book a great photographer? Absolutely. Can you still build that relationship and trust? Yes, it just happens faster.

But if you have the luxury of time, use it. Book your wedding photographer as early as possible. Not just to check a box or secure a date, but to give yourself the gift of that entire year of collaboration, planning, and relationship-building.
So When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer?
As soon as you’re ready. Get your date, then reach out to photographers next.
If you’re newly engaged and starting to think about vendors, don’t just book early to check a box. Book early because it gives you a year to build something that makes your wedding day—and your photos—something you’ll love looking back on.
I’m currently booking weddings for 2026 and 2027 in Northern Michigan and beyond. If you want to talk through what this could look like for your day, let’s set up a time to chat.
